Hot work takes place in many different situations and many different types of workplaces, and everyone who works with hot work must be certified. They have to complete a course and exam, and after 5 years they need to take a recertification course to maintain their certification.
In the recertification course, participants get a refresher on the theory behind hot work, and they need to show they can apply the knowledge and experience they have – not just as abstract theory, but in the context they’ll actually use it in.
In collaboration with Brannvernforeningen (the Norwegian Fire Protection Association), Storyboard developed a digital course where the content is built around the situations participants encounter in practice, in their own work with hot work. Instead of taking participants out into the situation, the digital course brings the situation to the participants – varied and repeatable, without depending on physical reality.
Through interactive elements, participants make choices, see the consequences, adjust and try again. They encounter realistic scenarios across the course’s different modules, where they need to show they can use the risk matrix, the checklist and common sense, and make the right calls in each situation.
The course was produced in Composer – Storyboard’s own authoring tool – first in a Norwegian version, then translated into both English and Polish.
This course is the first of three courses Storyboard has developed for Brannvernforeningen so far, alongside a digital exam in hot work, which has also been translated into English and Polish.
